Hungary to launch €100 million biogas support scheme

The Hungarian government is set to introduce a significant support scheme to boost biogas and biomethane production nationwide. The scheme will be allocated a budget of 40 billion forints (around 100 million euros).

Viktor Horváth, Deputy State Secretary for Energy Transition, announced the initiative during his keynote speech at the Budapest Biogas Summit.

The funding will cover the entire biogas production chain, from the collection and storage of raw materials, through all stages of biogas processing, right up to connection to the national grid.

The amount of financial aid available will vary depending on the size of the project.

Larger applications can receive between 500 million and 5 billion forints (approximately 1.25 to 12.5 million euros), while smaller businesses will be eligible for grants ranging from 200 million to 800 million forints (about 500,000 to 2 million euros).

The application period is expected to open in mid-July and run until mid-September.

Horváth pointed out that Hungary currently falls behind some of its Central and Eastern European neighbours, such as the Czech Republic and Poland, in biogas and biomethane production.

To address this, the Hungarian government aims to triple biogas production to 600 million cubic metres by 2030, and to significantly increase biomethane output from 5 million cubic metres to nearly 200 million cubic metres.
