The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has approved and contracted financing of R$148.5 million for Bioo Paraná Holding SA to build a biomethane plant in Toledo, in western Paraná. The total investment planned for the project is R$196 million.
Of the total amount financed, R$101.5 million comes from the Climate Fund and R$47.1 million from the Finem line, which is aimed at supporting larger projects.
The plant will have the capacity to produce 11 million cubic metres of biomethane per year. According to project estimates, operations will prevent the emission of approximately 80 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate 210 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and a further 90 once operations begin.
Alongside biomethane, Bioo will produce organic matrix fertiliser, an input widely used in agriculture across the western region of Paraná.
A further byproduct will be biogenic CO₂, generated naturally during the production process. The gas will be purified to food-grade quality and can be supplied to industries such as beverages, replacing CO₂ of fossil origin.
The project integrates renewable energy production, the reuse of organic waste, and the supply of industrial inputs, contributing to the decarbonisation of the regional production chain.
Aloizio Mercadante, president of BNDES, said: "The supported project minimises the negative impacts of organic waste on the environment by directing it towards the manufacture of energy-rich and high-value-added products, such as biomethane and CO₂. The renewable energy produced and the reduction of methane emissions strengthen the circular economy in Brazil, in line with the energy transition policy of President Lula's government."
Maurício Cótica, CEO of Bioo, said: "This funding marks another step in consolidating Bioo's model: transforming organic waste into renewable energy and high-value bioproducts. Having the support of BNDES once again — especially through the Climate Fund — reinforces the merit of the project and its relevance to the energy transition in Brazil. Also in Toledo, we will expand the impact with decarbonisation, circular economy, and regional development working together."
