Bio Capital agree two-year food waste partnership with North Yorkshire Council

The partnership represents a significant step forward in supporting North Yorkshire Council’s sustainability ambitions, offering an innovative, low-carbon waste solution for businesses across the region.
Under the contract, Bio Capital will operate a dedicated non-household food waste collection service using its fleet of environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
This approach will help reduce the carbon footprint associated with the collection process while ensuring food waste is managed responsibly.
Collected waste will be transported to Bio Capital’s local Emerald Biogas anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, where it will be converted into renewable energy to power homes and businesses across the region.
The facility also produces biofertiliser, which is returned to farmland, contributing to a circular economy and supporting sustainable agriculture.
George O’Malley, Chief Operations Officer at Bio Capital, said: “Our partnership with North Yorkshire Council is a fantastic example of how local authorities and green infrastructure providers can work together to deliver fully circular environmental benefits.
"By using our CNG-powered fleet and processing food waste at our Emerald Biogas facility, we’re not just collecting waste – we’re transforming it into renewable energy and helping to build a more sustainable future for the region.”
Cllr Richard Foster, North Yorkshire Council’s Executive Member for Managing Our Environment, added: “We are very pleased to be partnering with Bio Capital to deliver this new food waste collection service for our commercial customers.
"It demonstrates our commitment to continually improving the services we offer to businesses and supports our ambition to lead by example in securing a sustainable future for North Yorkshire. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have across the county.”
