Puro.earth has certified and issued CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) for a project at the VEAS wastewater treatment plant in Norway, developed by Inherit Carbon Solutions — the world's first instance of biogenic CO2 from biogas production being captured and permanently stored geologically.
The certification, Puro.earth's first for a BECCS facility in Europe, covers a collaboration between Inherit Carbon Solutions (project developer), HoopCO2 (capture and liquefaction) and Northern Lights JV (transport and offshore storage). More than 700 CORCs have been issued in the public Puro Registry, covering the project's first four months of operation from February to May 2026.
The approach connects existing biogas infrastructure with dedicated CO2 transport and storage, turning a wastewater treatment byproduct into verifiable carbon removal. Puro.earth said the model could be replicated across the biogas sector globally.
VEAS, Norway's largest wastewater treatment plant, processes wastewater from more than 800,000 residents across Oslo, Bærum and Asker. Biogenic CO2 released during the plant's biogas production is captured and liquefied by HoopCO2, then trucked to Northern Lights' receiving terminal in Øygarden, west of Bergen. From there it is piped offshore for permanent storage 2,600 metres below the seabed.
Northern Lights has stored fossil-based CO2 offshore since August 2025; VEAS marks its first delivery of biogenic CO2. The site is expected to supply up to 7,000 tonnes of CO2 a year to Northern Lights under the agreement with Inherit.
The project followed validation and verification under Puro.earth's Geologically Stored Carbon methodology (2024 edition), including third-party VVB audit. Ongoing MRV will support further CORC issuances as the project develops.
Jan-Willem Bode, president of Puro.earth, said the project demonstrated the potential of combining biogas and carbon storage infrastructure, and pointed to the scale of biogas production across Norway, the Nordics and wider Europe as an indicator of BECCS's regional potential.
Kaja Voss, CEO of Inherit Carbon Solutions, said the certification gave the company a credible route to market, and that the collaboration with HoopCO2 and Northern Lights pointed to further opportunities for scaling biogenic CO2 removal across the biogas sector.
