VIDA bioenergy has begun injecting biomethane into Cadent's gas network from its new Wormslade facility in Northamptonshire, becoming the 46th biomethane plant connected across Cadent's UK operations and the 17th on its East Midlands network.
The site, located near Market Harborough, is designed to process around 46,000 tonnes of agricultural feedstock per year, producing approximately 68GWh of biomethane annually. The plant will also generate around 70,000 tonnes of digestate each year for use as organic fertiliser.
Richard Sansom, director of Cadent's East Midlands network, said the connection was 'another positive signal for a sector that is continuing to grow at pace', adding that projects such as Wormslade demonstrate that renewable gas 'is not a future concept, it is being delivered today'.
Cadent currently has connected biomethane capacity of around 4TWh annually and is targeting 20TWh by 2035. Earlier this year the network operator said 38 applications to build new or expanded biomethane plants had been submitted during the first window under its cost-sharing and clustering model.
Lars Boetje, CEO of VIDA bioenergy, said the first injection of biomethane into the grid was 'a defining milestone for the Wormslade project' and that the company would now begin ramping up production towards full capacity.
