Viking Line’s bio-LNG vessels commence operation

Viking Line has begun operating its ro-ro vessels, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, on bio-LNG to generate compliance credits for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) pooling service.

The move follows a Letter of Intent signed at the end of 2024 between the two companies to develop their collaboration.

Both vessels sail daily between Turku, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, carrying passengers and cargo across the Baltic Sea.

Gasum supplies the bio-LNG and manages the FEUM pooling service, offering over-compliance to vessels that still operate on conventional fuels.

Fuel consumption and emissions data are collected and verified using DNV technology, with the pool’s balance confirmed for EU reporting at year-end.

Jacob Granqvist, Gasum’s Vice President for Maritime, said: “Demand for FEUM pooling is becoming so high that it would not be possible for Gasum to generate the needed compliance using only its own bunkering vessels. Collaborating with a trusted partner like Viking Line allows us to expand the service to a larger group of shipowners and maintain the scale and stability of the pool.”

Viking Line CEO Jan Hanses added: “We aim to be among the frontrunners in demonstrating how Finnish maritime can transition to a fossil-free future. For two years, we have offered passengers and cargo customers the option to use biogas on the Turku–Stockholm route. Increasing our bio-LNG use to 50% enables substantial emission reductions, and we are delighted to work with Gasum to help the wider European maritime industry cut emissions.”

FuelEU Maritime, the EU regulation underpinning the initiative, is designed to reduce carbon intensity in European maritime transport and allows voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels.
