VIDA Bioenergy ramps up UK Expansion

news item image

VIDA Bioenergy, a wholly owned subsidiary of VTTI, has commenced operations at its first UK biomethane facility while advancing construction of a second site.

The company, which launched earlier in 2025, aims to become a leading producer of biomethane in Europe by converting biomass into renewable gas through dedicated facilities across the UK.

Its first operational site, Glentham Green Energy in Lincolnshire, began injecting biomethane into the National Transmission System earlier this year.

Using agricultural by-products such as straw, chicken manure, vegetable waste and sequential crops, the facility is expected to generate over 60 GWh of renewable gas per year - enough to meet the annual heating needs of roughly 5,200 homes.

Construction is already underway on VIDA’s second UK facility, Wormslade Green Energy, located in West Northamptonshire.

Once commissioned, it will process more than 45,000 tonnes of locally sourced agricultural residues and energy crops annually, adding further capacity to VIDA’s growing UK portfolio.

The Wormslade site also features a community integration plan, which includes infrastructure upgrades such as road improvements, alongside environmental measures like the planting of more than 4,000 native trees and hedgerows to enhance local biodiversity.

VIDA positions these benefits as part of its long-term commitment to both environmental stewardship and rural development.

While the expansion reflects confidence in biomethane as a renewable energy solution, it also highlights ongoing questions around scalability, land use and feedstock sustainability.

With competition for agricultural residues intensifying, long-term availability and sourcing practices will be key to ensuring the resilience and environmental integrity of such projects.

VIDA Bioenergy’s growth is underpinned by its parent company, VTTI B.V., a global player in energy infrastructure.

While VTTI has traditionally focused on energy storage and logistics, VIDA represents a strategic push into renewables - particularly within sectors aligned to net-zero targets and national energy transition frameworks.
