Sendai Port biomass plant begins operations

Sendai-ko Biomass Power GK, a joint venture funded by Sumitomo Corporation, Tokyo Gas, Hokuriku Electric Power Company and Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku, has begun commercial operations at the Sendai Port Biomass Power Plant following the completion of construction in November 2025.
With an output of 112 MW and expected annual generation of around 800,000 MWh - equivalent to the electricity consumption of roughly 260,000 households - the facility is one of Japan’s largest dedicated biomass power plants.
The project is set to provide long-term, stable renewable energy to the Tohoku region and support national progress toward carbon neutrality.
The plant uses wood-based biomass fuels, including pellets and chips sourced from thinning activities, mill residues and other lower-grade timber generated through forest management.
All fuels come from forests certified under recognised forest management schemes, ensuring sustainable sourcing.
Sumitomo Corporation oversees procurement, maintaining full traceability and prioritising responsible use of forest resources.
The project partners said the plant represents a significant step in their respective climate and renewable energy strategies.
Sumitomo Corporation aims for carbon neutrality across all group operations by 2050 and now holds roughly 2 GW of renewable energy equity capacity worldwide.
Tokyo Gas emphasised its “Compass 2030” goal of achieving net-zero CO₂, highlighting continued collaboration to expand its renewable portfolio.
Hokuriku Electric Power noted that the facility supports its ambition to exceed 1 million kW of renewable capacity by the early 2030s, building on experience from biomass co-combustion projects.
Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku added that its participation aligns with efforts to promote sustainable regional development and advance a carbon-neutral society.
Sendai-ko Biomass Power GK was established in January 2021, with ownership split between Sumitomo Corporation (45 per cent), Tokyo Gas via Prominet Power (25 per cent), Hokuriku Electric Power (25 per cent) and Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku (5 per cent).
The plant is located at 10-16 Minato 4-chome, Miyagino-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, and is expected to play a central role in supplying low-impact renewable energy for years to come.
