Saica Group, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of recycled paper for corrugated cardboard and sustainable packaging, officially inaugurated a new biomass boiler at its Champblain-Laveyron site in France on 19 September. Following similar projects at the Venizel and Nogent-sur-Seine sites, it is Saica’s third biomass boiler installation in France.

The boiler primarily uses locally sourced end-of-life wood within a 100-kilometre radius, reflecting Saica’s commitment to a circular economy and sustainable resource management.

Supported by ADEME under the 2019 BCIAT programme, the biomass boiler generates the steam required to dry paper produced from previously landfilled materials.

The installation is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 60%, reduce natural gas consumption by 77%, and divert 90% of paper by-products from landfill, with 83% recovered directly on site.

It will enable the recovery of 105,000 tonnes of end-of-life wood and 50,000 tonnes of paper manufacturing by-products each year, while strengthening the site’s ISO 50001 Energy Management certification.

“We are proud to celebrate this inauguration in France, a country central to Saica’s growth and history,” said Susana Alejandro, President and CEO of Saica Group.

“The Champblain biomass boiler is both an industrial milestone and a strategic commitment. With a €174 million modernisation plan, we are enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of our sites while creating local value, reducing environmental impact, improving worker safety, ensuring job stability, and delivering better service to our customers.”
