Qarlbo Biodiversity has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Toronto-based Woodland Biofuels to supply up to 500,000 tonnes of sustainably sourced pine forest thinnings from its U.S.-based forestry operations.

The agreement supports both organisations' shared commitment to ecological restoration and renewable energy through sustainable biomass production, according to the companies.

The deal represents a major milestone in the implementation of Qarlbo's Nature+® Forest Management Strategy -  a biodiversity-focused approach that integrates conservation, native species restoration and responsible forestry production. Designed for biomass-intensive industries, the strategy not only provides a renewable feedstock but also contributes to carbon sequestration and the generation of biodiversity credits.

“This partnership with Woodland Biofuels exemplifies how sustainable forestry can serve both economic and ecological goals,” said Aleksandra Holmlund, CEO of Qarlbo Biodiversity.

“The pine forest thinnings produced for Woodland Biofuels will come from forests that support local ecosystems and the broader environment.”

The 'sustainably harvested' biomass will be sourced from Qarlbo Biodiversity's expanding landholdings in the United States, including its flagship 10,580-acre project in southern Louisiana. All biomass will be certified for sustainability and aligned with biodiversity-positive outcomes, added the organisations.

Greg Nuttall, CEO of Woodland Biofuels, commented: “Our collaboration with Qarlbo Biodiversity aligns with our commitment to sourcing renewable feedstocks responsibly. By using pine forest thinnings harvested in a sustainable way, we are advancing our mission to produce clean energy while supporting biodiversity and ecosystem health.”

The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but the total volume of biomass supplied could reach 500,000 tonnes over the course of the partnership.
