Oman launches national biogas project

Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) and OQ Trading have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly develop a national biogas initiative aimed at turning organic waste into renewable energy and industrial-grade bio-carbon dioxide.
The project will focus on extracting and refining around 20 million cubic metres of biogas annually from existing and future landfill and biofacility sites managed by be'ah.
The gas is expected to contain roughly 40% biomethane and 60% bio-CO₂, both of which can be used in low-carbon industrial processes.
As part of the agreement, be'ah and OQ Trading will collaborate on a comprehensive roadmap that includes feasibility studies, infrastructure analysis and market development strategies.
The initiative is designed to support local investment, technology development and align with the Sultanate’s Vision 2040 goals for economic diversification and environmental sustainability.
"This is a new milestone in our journey toward sustainable energy recovery from waste," said Engineer Tariq Ali Al Amri, CEO of be'ah. "We're turning an environmental challenge into an opportunity that supports emissions reduction and strengthens our energy alternatives."
Said Talib Al Maawali, Executive Director for the Middle East at OQ Trading, said the collaboration is part of a long-term plan to diversify Oman’s energy mix and advance its 2050 carbon neutrality target.
“This project forms the nucleus of future waste-to-energy initiatives and will support the growth of a national clean energy value chain,” he said.
The initiative showcases an integrated model of cooperation between Oman’s energy and environmental sectors, combining be'ah’s expertise in waste management with OQ Trading’s global capabilities in energy trading and project development.
