Mondi invests in €120m biomass plant at Slovakian mill

Scheduled for completion in 2027, the €120 million investment – net of subsidies from the European Union’s Modernisation Fund – will raise the mill’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90%.
Replacing the site’s existing bark boiler, the new facility will provide a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for the mill and the local community.
Mondi SCP already supplies district heating in Ružomberok and will be able to expand this service without relying on natural gas once the plant is operational.
The project also promises major environmental benefits. The biomass plant will cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 50% and particulate matter emissions by up to 83% compared with the existing system, meeting the strictest emissions standards and helping improve air quality in the region.
“By increasing energy self-sufficiency, the project provides long-term operational resilience and supply reliability, strengthening Mondi’s ability to deliver consistent, high-quality products for its customers while also enhancing cost competitiveness,” said Joachim Grunewald, Managing Director of Mondi SCP.
The facility will run on residual materials from the pulp and paper production process, reducing landfill waste while maximising the use of renewable energy sources.
All biomass will be sourced from certified forests that follow responsible management practices, ensuring that the investment supports long-term environmental sustainability.
Mondi emphasises that the improved environmental performance will make an important contribution to its Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), the Group’s overarching sustainability strategy.
