Minas Gerais opens its first biomethane plant

The opening of Minas Gerais’ first biomethane power plant marks a milestone in the state’s shift towards sustainable energy.
Located in Tupaciguara, in the Triângulo Mineiro region, the Zeg Biogás facility - a partnership between Zeg and Bioenergética Aroeira - pioneers the production of biomethane from vinasse, a by-product of sugarcane processing.
The project strengthens Minas Gerais’ position as a centre for energy innovation and highlights the value of public policies that support a low-carbon economy.
Historically, the state has played a leading role in Brazil’s economic development, particularly in mining, agribusiness and energy production.
The move towards biomethane builds on this legacy, diversifying the local energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
By converting agricultural waste into clean fuel, the plant helps cut greenhouse gas emissions and minimises pollution, showing that economic progress and environmental protection can coexist.
The venture represents an investment of around €14.3 million, reflecting confidence in Minas Gerais’ capacity to lead in clean energy.
The project has already begun operations and is expected to generate about 70 direct and indirect jobs.
It also provides opportunities for local suppliers and service companies, stimulating regional economic growth. During the inauguration, the Biorota BR-050 initiative was also launched to link renewable energy producers and consumers in the region, encouraging further carbon reductions across the supply chain.
State officials noted that renewables already account for more than 30% of Minas Gerais’ energy matrix, above the national average, with biomass ranking among its most important sources.
Biomethane projects such as Zeg Biogás strengthen energy security, promote circular economy principles and align with international efforts to cut carbon emissions.
