Goa drafts policy to boost bioenergy

The Goa government in India has drafted a comprehensive policy to promote bioenergy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aiming to support cleaner and more sustainable energy sources across the state.

The proposed policy focuses on encouraging investments in various bioenergy technologies such as biogas, biomass power and liquid biofuels.

It offers incentives including financial assistance, streamlined approval processes and facilitation of land acquisition to attract both public and private sector participation.

A senior official from Goa’s Energy Department said: “The bioenergy sector has enormous potential to contribute to Goa’s energy mix, reduce carbon emissions and create employment opportunities. This policy is a step towards realising those benefits.”

The draft policy also intends to fast-track project clearances and simplify regulatory procedures, thereby creating an enabling environment for bioenergy developers.

Highlighting the environmental benefits, the official added: “By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, we can lower greenhouse gas emissions and meet our commitments under national and international climate agreements.”

The policy is aligned with India’s broader energy goals, particularly the National Bio-Energy Mission, which aims to increase the share of bioenergy in the country’s overall energy consumption.

Renewable energy consultant Anjali Desai commented, “Goa’s policy could serve as a model for other states seeking to diversify their energy portfolios and promote sustainable development.”

The government has invited public feedback on the draft policy before finalising and implementing it.
