Gas network upgrade to pave the way for biomethane in Wales

A significant upgrade to the gas network in Abergavenny, Wales is scheduled to commence later this month, with work beginning in the Park Avenue area on 18 August.

The project, led by Wales & West Utilities, is expected to run through to May 2026, depending on engineering progress and unforeseen circumstances.

The aim is to maintain a safe and dependable gas supply for local homes and businesses, while also preparing the network for future low-carbon energy sources such as hydrogen and biomethane.

Andrew Coleman, who is managing the project, said: “These essential works will help ensure the gas keeps flowing to homes and businesses now and well into the future. By upgrading the network, we’re making it ready to transport greener gases like biomethane and hydrogen, supporting the UK’s transition to a net-zero energy system.”

The company has worked alongside Monmouthshire County Council to coordinate the plans, which will involve a series of rolling road closures. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys during the construction period.

“We recognise that this work may cause some inconvenience,” Mr Coleman added, “but it’s necessary to secure the long-term reliability of the gas system in Abergavenny. Our engineers will be on site throughout to ensure the work is carried out safely, efficiently, and with as little disruption as possible.”

Wales & West Utilities serves around 7.5 million people across Wales and the South West of England.
