Future Biogas acquires East Yorkshire biomethane plant

Future Biogas has acquired Burton Agnes Renewables Limited (BAR), a biomethane production facility at Harpham Grange Farm in East Yorkshire that the company has managed and operated since 2021.

The plant currently produces approximately 40GWh of biomethane per year — enough to power around 2,800 typical UK households — and has the potential to capture more than 7,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, which the company said could render the site carbon negative.

Local farms supply sustainable energy crops as part of diversified rotations to support biomethane production, with solid and liquid digestate returned to farms as a low-carbon source of nutrients and organic matter.

The acquisition makes BAR the tenth plant in which Future Biogas holds a majority stake. The company now operates 11 sites in total.

Philipp Lukas, CEO of Future Biogas, said the deal reflected the company's long-term commitment to the site and to the surrounding agricultural community.

"We will continue to operate the plant, while exploring potential development opportunities that will increase production and further enhance the sustainability of the gas produced there," he said.
