ENplus®, the globally recognised certification scheme for wood pellet quality, has now been formally accredited by the European Cooperation for Accreditation (EA), becoming the first and only wood pellet quality certification to receive this distinction.
The accreditation follows a comprehensive evaluation process carried out in line with EA 1/22 A-AB 2023 – the official criteria for assessing conformity assessment schemes by EA member accreditation bodies. The assessment was led by ACCREDIA, Italy’s national accreditation body, with input gathered from all EA member organisations.
As a result of this recognition, all certification bodies listed by ENplus will now be required to hold specific accreditation to the ENplus standard. This replaces the previous requirement to hold a general ISO-based accreditation for wood pellets, marking a significant shift towards greater specificity and quality assurance in the sector.
In 2024, ENplus certified more than 13.3 million tonnes of wood pellets worldwide. Germany remained the largest producer with nearly 3.7 million tonnes, followed by Austria at 1.7 million tonnes, and France with 681,000 tonnes. Spain and Poland also ranked among the top five producing countries.
Following a modest decline in certified volumes last year, projections for 2025 suggest a rebound, with expected production exceeding 14 million tonnes, based on forecasts submitted by certified companies.
The past year has also seen major progress in ENplus’s fraud prevention efforts. The scheme’s fraud management team enhanced its blacklist system, identifying not only unauthorised suppliers but also misleading websites and contact information. These efforts are guided by legally approved procedures and reflect ENplus’s commitment to integrity and transparency.
To date, ENplus has resolved more than 1,300 fraud cases, reinforcing its role as a key safeguard for both the industry and consumers.
In support of its fraud prevention work, ENplus has also launched a dedicated mobile app. This tool allows users to verify supplier certification, scan pellet packaging to confirm its status, and report suspected fraud. The app has already been downloaded by thousands of users across Europe and beyond.
