enfinium and ENGIE have signed a three-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that will see around 390 GWh of electricity supplied annually from enfinium’s new energy-from-waste facility in Leeds, England.
Beginning in 2025, the agreement will provide enough power to meet the needs of approximately 140,000 British homes each year and marks the first PPA between the two companies.
The electricity will be generated at enfinium’s Skelton Grange facility, a state-of-the-art plant scheduled to begin operations in summer 2025.
The facility will use unrecyclable waste to produce reliable, low-carbon electricity, contributing to the UK’s energy security and circular economy goals.
Wayne Robertson, Chief Commercial & Strategy Officer at enfinium, said: “This agreement highlights the benefits of using society’s unrecyclable waste to generate reliable, homegrown energy to power British homes and businesses.
"We are delighted our new state-of-the-art Skelton Grange facility will be contributing to energy security and economic growth when it becomes operational later this year.”
Graham Oxley, Chief Commercial Officer at ENGIE Supply UK, added: “Securing reliable power from sustainable sources for our customers is core to what we do. We’re pleased to partner with enfinium, enabling us to deliver stable and reliable energy whilst reducing unrecyclable waste being sent to landfill.”
Skelton Grange will divert up to 410,000 tonnes of unrecyclable waste from landfill each year, helping to decarbonise waste management across West Yorkshire and beyond.
The facility also supports the Aire Valley Heat and Power Network, which recently received £19.5 million in government funding to develop low-carbon district heating using waste heat from the site.
The £500 million investment in Skelton Grange has brought significant economic value to the region, with over 400 jobs created during the construction phase and more than 40 permanent roles to follow once the facility is operational.
