Egypt is pressing ahead with a new biogas initiative in Beni Suef Governorate aimed at converting agricultural and animal waste into renewable energy.
The project, announced by the Cabinet on Sunday, is being implemented in cooperation with the Biogas Energy Foundation for Sustainable Development - an affiliate of the Ministry of Environment - and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
The update followed a meeting between Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, Dr Manal Awad, and Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, to discuss scaling up the use of agricultural and animal waste for biogas and fertiliser production.
In partnership with energy company Eni, the scheme will see the construction of a biogas plant with a daily capacity of 5,000 cubic metres, supported by a collection system handling 134 tonnes of animal waste per day.
Officials say the initiative is part of a broader national push to expand biogas technology, providing a safe means of disposing of organic waste while generating clean energy and producing organic fertiliser.
Since its establishment, the Biogas Energy Foundation has installed 2,000 biogas units across 19 governorates, producing 2.152 million cubic metres of gas annually, and converting 53,800 tonnes of animal waste into 50,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser.
