Edinburgh biochar firm Carbogenics secures $3 million to scale carbon removal technology

Carbogenics, an Edinburgh-based bio-carbon designer, has closed a $3 million investment and grant funding round to accelerate growth and international expansion of its carbon removal technologies.

The funding will support the deployment of CreChar, a biochar product designed to transform biomass waste into a carbon-negative solution, particularly within the biogas industry.

The company plans to enhance manufacturing capabilities in the United States and expand its centralised UK operations, creating new roles in both markets.

US and UK investors back climate technology

The investment was secured from green investment leaders including Dangerous Ventures, Green Angel Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, Old College Capital, and the University of Edinburgh's in-house venture investment fund. Major grant funding came from Innovate UK, New Mexico Gas, and New Mexico Government Economic Development Department.

"Carbogenics is tackling these challenges head-on with technology that is scalable and verifiable, and a product innovation platform that has massive commercial potential," said Ward Hendon of Dangerous Ventures. "After speaking with Ed Craig, it was clear this is a team capable of delivering real climate impact at a potentially global scale."

CreChar targets anaerobic digestion applications

CreChar is designed for anaerobic digestion applications and is proven to enhance biological stability, reduce requirements for chemical additives, enable feedstock access and enhance biogas production, leading to improved profitability and sustainability.

The company's expansion addresses biomass waste streams in regions such as New Mexico, converting agricultural and forestry residues into products that address environmental challenges including sealing orphan gas wells, supporting direct air capture, and enabling soil enhancement and carbon sequestration.

Scottish Water collaboration continues

Beyond CreChar, Carbogenics is continuing its collaboration with Scottish Water on the Filachar project, which focuses on sustainable approaches to managing sewage sludge. Building on work completed in 2025, the partnership seeks to develop carbon removal solutions that reduce environmental impact within the water industry.

Spun out of the University of Edinburgh in 2016, Carbogenics maintains a strong working relationship with the university and is headquartered on campus.

Market positioned for net zero targets

The company's expansion aligns with growing market momentum around carbon removal solutions as governments strengthen commitments to net zero targets.

"Carbogenics' approach to trapping and storing carbon for hundreds of years is exactly the sort of approach which our investors fully support," said Cam Ross, chief executive officer of Green Angel Ventures. "We're very glad to be playing a part in this important milestone, to drive the company and its impact to the next stage."

Ed Craig, chief executive officer of Carbogenics, commented: "This has given us the confidence and validation to drive and demonstrate the value of our breakthrough CreChar product, but also to create other viable carbon products in the UK, Europe and the US. This is a period of growth and expansion in Carbogenics and I am grateful for the backing of so many investors at this time. We will continue to innovate and create tailored products for key environmental issues."
