CycleØ and Gas Networks Ireland seal major biomethane grid connection deal

Gas Networks Ireland and biogas infrastructure company CycleØ have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the development and connection of biomethane production facilities to the national gas network.
The partnership supports the Irish Government’s target of delivering up to 5.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of domestically produced biomethane by 2030.
As part of the agreement, CycleØ will invest €100 million to develop four new agri-based biomethane plants across Limerick, Kildare, Cavan and Galway.
Once operational, the facilities are expected to produce a combined 160 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable gas annually - enough to heat approximately 12,000 Irish homes.
Gas Networks Ireland will facilitate the connection of these plants to the national grid, allowing for the direct injection of biomethane into the network.
The collaboration also aims to streamline regulatory and technical processes, standardise safety and design requirements, and ensure efficient delivery of grid connection projects.
Karen Doyle, Head of Business Development at Gas Networks Ireland, welcomed the agreement: “Partnerships like these are central to our strategy of increasing biomethane integration across the gas network. Biomethane will play a vital role in Ireland’s energy future, and we look forward to working with CycleØ as we advance our Pathways to a Net Zero Carbon Network programme, with a goal of achieving 38% biomethane in the gas network by 2045.”
CycleØ’s Ireland Country Manager, James Manley, added: “This MoU marks a strategic milestone in our long-term commitment to build, own and operate biogas plants in Ireland. Ireland holds enormous potential for biomethane production—the highest per capita in Europe. It’s a carbon-neutral solution that allows us to decarbonise the energy system while reducing agricultural emissions.”
The MoU commits both parties to close collaboration on grid connection planning, regulatory alignment, and technical support to help deliver Ireland’s renewable gas ambitions.
