Bunge invests €46.5m in biomass boiler for Hungarian plant
Global agribusiness firm Bunge has announced a $50 million (€46.5 million) investment to install a new biomass-fired steam boiler at its oilseed processing facility in Martfű. The project aims to modernise the plant’s energy system and improve efficiency.
The planned unit will replace four existing steam boilers, consolidating steam generation into a single, high-efficiency system.
According to Bunge, the biomass boiler will achieve a heat-utilisation efficiency of around 86 percent, providing a more reliable and sustainable source of thermal energy for the facility’s operations.
The upgraded system will incorporate automated ash handling and advanced emission-control technology, designed to reduce maintenance needs, limit downtime, and ensure compliance with EU industrial-emissions standards.
In keeping with Bunge’s circular-production approach, the boiler will primarily use sunflower husks - a by-product of the company’s oilseed processing - as fuel.
Construction of the biomass boiler is scheduled for completion by September 2026, with full operation expected in early 2028.
