Barcelona’s WtEnergy raises €10m to scale biomass and waste gasification technology

Barcelona-based Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions (WtEnergy) has secured €10 million in financing to accelerate deployment of its biomass and industrial waste gasification technology across Europe.

The company, which specialises in energy recovery through gasification, will use the funds to execute its project pipeline, standardise plant design, strengthen its organisation, develop new syngas applications and expand across Europe.

The funding round was led by SC Net Zero Ventures, Suma Capital's climate tech fund, with participation from Shell Ventures and existing shareholder Cemex Ventures.

WtEnergy's thermochemical conversion process transforms biomass and solid waste into syngas (synthesis gas) via atmospheric gasification in a bubbling fluidised bed gasifier. The company's proprietary reforming process then removes contaminants to produce clean syngas, which can replace fossil fuels in energy-intensive industrial processes or be processed to produce hydrogen, methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The company designs and operates modular plants ranging from 5-50 MW, intended for direct integration into industrial facilities. WtEnergy claims this enables customers to reduce energy costs, lower CO₂ emissions and advance circular economy objectives by recovering waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill or incineration.

WtEnergy currently focuses on key industrial decarbonisation sectors including cement, paper, rendering, chemicals and ceramics, where it has projects in operation and at advanced development stages.

Andrés Ponce, chief executive officer of WtEnergy, said: "This financing round represents a key milestone for Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions. It supports the accelerated deployment of our technology at an industrial scale, whilst helping our customers recover energy from their waste, turning it into a competitive source of alternative energy and new low-carbon molecules."

He added that having partners such as Shell Ventures, Cemex Ventures and Suma Capital "strengthens our vision and encourages us to take the next step in our growth".

Natalia Ruiz, partner at Suma Capital, said: "We are very pleased to support Waste to Energy Advanced Solutions in this new phase of growth. Their technology, team and the industrial traction they have already demonstrated fit perfectly with our investment strategy in technological solutions with proven traction and strong scaling potential, enabling progress towards a more efficient, low-carbon industrial model."

WtEnergy was founded in 2017 by Ponce, with Antonio Crous joining as co-founder in 2019 to scale the business commercially and develop technology implementation within strategic industries.

In 2023, the European Union awarded Cemex and WtEnergy a €4.4 million grant for implementation of waste-to-fuel technology utilising synthetic gas at Cemex's Alicante cement plant in Spain.
