Anaergia S.r.l., the Italian subsidiary of Canadian renewable energy company Anaergia Inc., has signed a binding agreement to supply key capital equipment for a groundbreaking biomethane project in Livorno, Italy.
The new facility will be the country’s first to combine source-separated organics (SSO) with wastewater sludge for renewable gas production.
The agreement was made with RDR S.p.A., a prominent Italian engineering and construction firm awarded a public tender by ASA Livorno, the operator of the city’s municipal wastewater treatment plant in Tuscany.
Anaergia’s technology will enable the co-digestion of organic waste streams, transforming them into renewable biomethane.
Construction on the facility is already underway, with full commissioning expected by December 2026.
The total project investment is valued at approximately C\$25 million, with Anaergia set to recognise revenues of C\$3.2 million (€2.15 million) from the contract.
“We are pleased to be partnering with Anaergia on this groundbreaking project for ASA Livorno,” said Francesco Freddo, Head of Commercial Department at RDR.
“Anaergia’s expertise in anaerobic digestion and its proven ability to co-digest organic waste and sludge make it an ideal technology partner.”
Assaf Onn, CEO of Anaergia, added: “While Anaergia’s track record in Italy and in co-digestion globally is well established, we’re especially excited to deliver the country’s first co-digestion facility. This project showcases how we can convert two complementary waste streams into a valuable renewable energy source - helping Livorno, and the planet, move toward a more sustainable future.”
