Moeve and ENSO partner on industrial biomass conversion and renewable gas development

Spanish energy companies Moeve and ENSO have agreed to collaborate on replacing fossil fuels in energy-intensive industrial processes with biomass and renewable gas alternatives.

The partnership will target sectors with high demand for steam and thermal energy, including chemicals, paper and board, and food and beverage, where generation systems currently rely on coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels. The companies said they would offer solutions to transition these facilities to advanced biomass-fired models.

Beyond biomass conversion, the alliance will also pursue renewable gas opportunities including the conversion of biogas plants to biomethane production and the potential development of e-fuels using biogenic CO2 captured at bioenergy facilities. Moeve may act as an offtaker for green molecules produced through these projects, while ENSO contributes renewable generation and biogenic carbon capture capabilities.

ENSO already operates a biopower plant in Garray, Soria, which was the first in Spain to integrate a system for capturing and upgrading food-grade CO2 from 100% renewable sources.

Elias Hernandez, chief executive of ENSO, said: "Industry needs solutions that allow it to advance its decarbonisation while increasing its competitiveness. We believe both can and should be part of the same equation. Our ability to invest in, build, and operate large-scale bioenergy infrastructure, combined with Moeve's capabilities and reach, will enable us to turn decarbonisation into a real industrial opportunity."

Both companies said the projects would be designed to generate savings, reduce emissions and enhance energy security for industrial clients.
