VIDA Bioenergy deploys integrated safety monitoring across Wormslade operations

VIDA bioenergy, the Netherlands-based producer of biomethane and biogenic carbon dioxide, has equipped its UK facility with Blackline Safety's G8 portable gas detectors.

The deployment consolidates gas detection, lone worker monitoring and emergency communication into a single device across the Wormslade plant.

The VIDA bioenergy facility transforms organic material into renewable energy products including biomethane, biogenic CO₂ and organic fertiliser. The company, launched in 2025 under energy infrastructure company VTTI, operates across the Netherlands and the UK with plans to become one of Europe's leading biomethane producers.

Its decision to deploy integrated safety monitoring reflects the specific hazards inherent in bioenergy operations. VIDA bioenergy's workforce faces exposure to gases, hazardous or contaminated water, explosive potential from hot work or combustible gas, confined space entry risks, and lone worker scenarios. Traditional safety systems requiring separate devices for gas detection, communication and emergency response create operational complexity and increase risk of equipment failure or missed alerts.

"Our goal is to not only ensure that our employees enjoy their work, but that they go home safe, and Blackline's features and very comprehensive package made it a perfect solution for us," said Dr Gary Cartwright, Plant Manager at VIDA bioenergy. "I had free choice to go anywhere I liked, but Blackline's offering was just so good, so robust and, in my view, the best on the market."

The G8 device enables remote monitoring of gas levels with simultaneous detection of multiple gases. On-site bump testing and calibration are possible without ethernet or Wi-Fi connections, reducing downtime. Pump cartridges can be remotely swapped, allowing workers to prepare for confined space entry without carrying additional tools.

The device also provides real-time fall detection, no-motion alerts and missed check-in notifications. Dual-band GPS/GNSS and 4G LTE connectivity enable emergency SOS with rapid worker location pinpointing. Push-to-talk functionality provides reliable site communication, and text messaging capabilities support mass notifications, all within a single device.

Professional 24/7 monitoring through Blackline's in-house Safety Operations Centre or global Alarm Receiving Centre partners ensures that alerts reach a human operator in real time. The system is designed to deliver alert notification in fewer than two seconds and receive response from operators in fewer than 60 seconds—a critical performance metric in emergency scenarios.

Data and analytics functionality powered by Blackline Analytics automates compliance reporting. This allows VIDA bioenergy's safety team to identify exposure trends or operational inefficiency before issues escalate. Problems can be resolved ahead of annual environmental operating permit reviews.

"Knowing there's a problem is only the first step," said Cody Slater, CEO of Blackline Safety. "G8 ensures you know exactly what's happening, where that worker is, and how to reach them immediately. In an emergency, that ability to act in real time can make the difference between rescue and recovery."

The deployment at Wormslade follows use of Blackline technology at sister sites within the VIDA bioenergy network. For Cartwright and his team, the consolidation of previously separate safety functions into integrated monitoring reduces device burden on workers whilst strengthening overall safety response capability.
