Wicomico County selects Waga Energy to upgrade landfill gas to RNG

Wicomico County has selected Waga Energy to build, own, operate and maintain a renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at the Newland Park Landfill in Salisbury, Maryland in the US.
Once operational, the plant is expected to produce more than 210,000 MMBtu of RNG each year.
The Maryland county, located on the eastern coast, will work with Waga Energy to upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG at the Newland Park site.
The facility will use Waga Energy’s WAGABOX technology to process up to 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas, delivering more than 210,000 MMBtu (62 GWh) of RNG annually to the local gas network.
The project is designed to comply with recent environmental regulations requiring improved control of methane emissions from landfills.
By capturing and purifying methane — a potent greenhouse gas — the project is expected to offset around 12,200 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions each year.
This reduction is comparable to the energy contained in approximately one million gallons of diesel fuel.
The production of pipeline-quality RNG is intended to support the circular economy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels by providing a local, renewable energy source for the community.
The Newland Park Landfill, owned and operated by Wicomico County, is located outside the city of Salisbury and accepts around 150,000 tonnes of waste annually.
Developed over 15 years, Waga Energy’s WAGABOX technology combines membrane filtration with cryogenic distillation to upgrade landfill gas.
The company says the process maximises renewable energy output by producing consistent, pipeline-quality RNG despite variations in landfill gas flow and composition.
Julie M. Giordano, Wicomico County Executive, said the selection marked “a major step forward” for the county’s environmental goals.
“By capturing methane and converting it into renewable natural gas, we are turning a waste by-product into a valuable energy resource while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This project positions Wicomico County as a leader in sustainable energy solutions on Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” she said.
Guénaël Prince, co-founder and chief executive of Waga Energy Inc., said the partnership would support the company’s growth in the state.
“Supplying RNG produced in Maryland for local use highlights the success of public-private collaboration in advancing the state’s ambitious decarbonisation goals,” he said.
