Vital Energi acquires Port Clarence biomass facility

The acquisition follows Vital Energi’s successful £175 million Nordic Bond issue, one of the largest Sterling-denominated Nordic Bond raises in the UK energy infrastructure sector.
The fundraising demonstrates strong international investor confidence in Vital Energi’s expertise, track record, and growth strategy.
The Port Clarence facility was acquired from Nuveen Infrastructure / Glenmont Infrastructure.
Strategic asset ownership
Port Clarence represents the next phase of Vital Energi’s evolution from energy solutions provider to significant asset owner. The company will leverage its experience from the successful commissioning of the Drakelow energy-from-waste (EfW) facility, further investing in its optimisation to enhance productivity and returns.
Drakelow currently processes up to 169,000 tonnes of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) annually, producing up to 18 MWe of electrical capacity.
In comparison, Port Clarence is expected to deliver over 30 MWe upon completion, representing a substantial step-change in scale and ambition.
Both facilities will export the energy generated to the national grid, contributing to the UK’s renewable energy capacity and decarbonisation goals.
The company said the acquisition underscores Vital Energi’s commitment to transforming stalled or underutilised infrastructure into operational, high-performing energy-from-waste assets, reinforcing its position as a leading player in the UK’s sustainable energy sector.
