Dutch bio-LNG specialist Nordsol has been selected by Norwegian renewable energy developer Vireo as the technology vendor for biogas upgrading and liquefaction at the new Lista Biogass plant, to be built at Lista Fly- og Næringspark in Farsund, southern Norway.
The decision follows Nordsol’s performance at the Hardanger project, where its liquefaction technology and professional project execution were successfully demonstrated.
Lista Biogass will process a diversified feedstock mix including manure, fish waste and food fats, with a design capacity of around 160,000 cubic metres per year. The facility is expected to produce approximately 90 GWh of fossil-free bio-LNG annually, supplying the transport and industrial sectors with a low-carbon alternative to conventional fuels.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with first production targeted for Q1 2028. All bio-LNG produced at the plant will be supplied to Nordic energy company Gasum under a long-term offtake agreement.
“We are pleased to deepen our cooperation with Vireo and to contribute to the acceleration of bio-LNG production in Norway,” said Léon van Bossum, CEO of Nordsol. “This second project with Vireo underlines our shared commitment to local, circular energy solutions and demonstrates how our liquefaction technology can reliably and cost-effectively convert diverse waste streams into a clean, fossil-free fuel.”
With both the Hardanger and Lista projects progressing, Vireo and Nordsol are supporting the rapid development of Norway’s liquefied biogas (LBG) infrastructure. The Lista project will enable the region to transform challenging organic residues into a low-carbon fuel, contributing to national ambitions for cleaner heavy transport and industry.
“Vireo is putting further trust in Nordsol by selecting them for our next project,” said Reinhard Lund-Mikkelson, CEO of Vireo. “Based on the performance so far on the Hardanger project, I am confident that Nordsol will continue to deliver a high level of professionalism, providing strong technology and high-quality workmanship.”
Nordsol’s proprietary liquefaction technology is designed for decentralised, small-scale applications and integrates directly with biogas upgrading units.
At Lista Biogass, this will allow efficient on-site conversion of biogas into liquefied biogas, reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as long-haul road transport and maritime applications, while creating sustainable value for the local community.
