Vila Galé Group to use biomethane in Portuguese hotels under Goldenergy partnership

The Vila Galé Group has announced plans to supply its hotels in Portugal with biomethane,  through an agreement with energy supplier Goldenergy. This move aims to support the group’s sustainability efforts by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Initially, Goldenergy will provide biomethane imported from Spain, with the intention to switch to domestically produced biomethane from Portugal in the near future. The annual supply to Vila Galé will total around 150,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Goldenergy entered the Portuguese biomethane market last year in collaboration with Axpo Iberia, part of the Swiss energy group Axpo, following the launch of a new production facility in Vila do Conde.

Gonçalo Rebelo de Almeida, CEO of the Vila Galé Group, said the adoption of biomethane is 'a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to sustainability,' adding that the gas offers important environmental benefits and supports the goal of making their hotels more eco-friendly.

Goldenergy, which has previously supplied biomethane to Portugal’s ceramics industry, is now expanding its services to the hospitality sector for the first time. Based in Vila Real, Goldenergy is a major supplier of 100% green electricity and is the second-largest provider of natural gas to Portuguese businesses.

Miguel Checa, Goldenergy’s General Manager, highlighted the company’s pride in supplying one of Portugal’s largest hotel chains. He emphasised that this partnership helps ensure medium- and long-term price stability amid market volatility while supporting Portuguese companies in meeting their sustainability targets.

The Vila Galé Group operates 49 hotels across Portugal, Brazil, Cuba and Spain.
