US renewable fuel volumes increased under new EPA rule

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule setting applicable volumes for 2026 and 2027 under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), with cellulosic biofuel volumes set higher than those proposed in an earlier draft.

Industry group RNG Coalition, which represents renewable natural gas producers, welcomed the decision as an improvement on the agency's original Set 2 proposal, while calling on the EPA to maintain a growth-oriented approach to administering the programme.

Speaking following the announcement, RNG Coalition founder and chief executive Johannes Escudero said the RFS had played a significant role in driving industry growth over the past decade, and described the standard as critical to supporting investment across American communities and expanding clean fuel supply.

He added that instability in global energy markets made the RFS increasingly important to US fuel supply and energy security.

Escudero noted that hundreds of facilities are currently under construction and said the industry is positioned to supply rising volumes of alternative fuels through the Set 2.0 period and beyond.

RNG Coalition said it is monitoring the final rule closely, with particular focus on how the EPA has handled implementation of biogas regulatory reforms, small refinery exemption allocations, and other provisions relevant to the biogas sector.
