Tallink’s MyStar joins Gasum pool to boost bio-LNG compliance

Nordic energy company Gasum has signed a pooling and bio-LNG agreement with Baltic energy firm Elenger, the fuel supplier for Tallink Group’s vessels.
Under the agreement, Tallink’s vessel MyStar will run on liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) to generate additional compliance credits for Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool.
Gasum will supply Elenger with bio-LNG from its Pori terminal, which will be used by MyStar to contribute to the pool. Tallink operates 11 passenger and cargo vessels on routes connecting Estonia, Finland, and Sweden.
Jacob Granqvist, Gasum’s Vice President for maritime, said: “We are very happy to welcome MyStar into the Gasum FuelEU Maritime pool as a compliance generator. This agreement with Elenger and Tallink strengthens our pool, expanding our ability to support customers in need of compliance. As the year-end approaches, we are doing our best to secure as much compliance as possible.”
Margus Kaasik, CEO of AS Elenger Grupp, added: “Tallink is setting an example for other operators in the Baltic Sea. They began using LNG as early as 2017, and Elenger has supported them throughout this journey. We are pleased to help take the next step toward renewable bio-LNG.”
Tallink CEO Paavo Nõgene said the company aims to fully replace the LNG needs of both MyStar and Megastar with bio-LNG within the next year, reducing the environmental impact for both passenger and freight customers.
The FuelEU Maritime regulation, introduced by the European Union, sets increasingly strict requirements on the carbon intensity of fuels used by ships operating in EU ports. Shipping companies are encouraged to shift from traditional fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives such as LNG and bio-LNG.
Pooling offers a cost-effective solution by allowing vessels that cannot run on LNG or bio-LNG to balance emissions with those that can, enabling multiple ships or companies to collectively meet compliance requirements.
Gasum said its FuelEU Maritime pool is distinguished by its reliability: as both a bio-LNG producer and buyer, Gasum guarantees the availability of low-emission fuel and takes full responsibility for the compliance of all vessels in the pool.
