St1 Biokraft inaugurates flagship biogas plant in Mönsterås

The plant, St1 Biokraft’s 13th, has an annual production capacity of around 138 GWh of liquefied biogas (LBG), making it one of the largest biogas facilities in Sweden.
The plant produces LBG equivalent to approximately 13 million litres of diesel per year and receives around 260,000 tonnes of manure annually from the region, one of Sweden’s most livestock-dense municipalities.
Construction began in February 2023 and was completed in spring 2025, with first deliveries already underway in August. Production is expected to reach full capacity by the turn of the year.
Miika Johansson, CEO of St1 Biokraft, said: “The Mönsterås plant is a major milestone in our ambition to produce 3 TWh of biogas by 2030 and strengthen our position as the leading biogas player in the Nordics. The facility demonstrates the potential of circular economy principles, producing renewable energy from local raw materials while supplying high-quality biofertiliser back to agriculture.”
Liquefied biogas reduces carbon emissions by up to 200% compared with fossil fuels, according to the company, while the plant’s biofertiliser products reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers and support soil health.
The Mönsterås facility is part of a broader Nordic expansion strategy, with investments of approximately 900 million SEK, partially supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet programme.
Local farmers co-own the plant through Mönsterås Biogas AB, ensuring strong community integration.
