SRS biomass facility start up

Energy efficiency and renewable energy company, Ameresco, together with the US Department of Energy (DOE) have completed the successful operational startup of the DOE's new Biomass Cogeneration Facility in Aiken, South Carolina.

The new 34-acre renewable energy facility located on Savannah River Site (SRS), was constructed over a 30 month period, with the investment of over 600,000 hours of labour. This was completed under the largest renewable Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) in US history. The new Biomass Cogeneration Facility has the capacity to burn 385,000 tons of forest residue per year, replacing an inefficient coal power station that was previously situated there.
