Renova confirms October restart of Shizuoka biomass plant

Japanese renewable energy company Renova Inc. has confirmed that its 75-megawatt Omaezakikou Biomass Power Plant will return to service in October, following several months of downtime caused by equipment failure.

The facility, situated at the Port of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture at the entrance to Suruga Bay, runs on a mix of wood pellets and palm kernel shells.

Operations at the plant were halted on 29 June after leakage was discovered in auxiliary boiler equipment. A subsequent investigation traced the problem to a mechanical fault.

The Omaezakikou plant, which was initially slated to come online in December 2023, experienced multiple delays before commencing operations on 29 January 2025. It is one of Renova’s key biomass projects and part of the company’s broader strategy to expand renewable power generation capacity across Japan.

Renova reported the shutdown in July, explaining that the precautionary stoppage was necessary while inspections and repairs were carried out. With the equipment issue now resolved, the company expects the facility to resume electricity production next month.
