Punjab government launches pilot biogas project

news item image
The government of Punjab has launched its inaugural pilot project to produce biogas from animal waste, marking a strategic step in its "Suthra Punjab Waste to Value Project."

Led by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), the initiative demonstrates a scalable model for converting organic waste into renewable energy.

In a recent progress meeting held in Lahore, the Chief Minister acknowledged LWMC’s execution of the project and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to circular economy solutions.

A key component of the broader programme includes a 50 MW waste-to-energy plant, designed to process 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day. The facility is expected to play a critical role in reducing landfill reliance while contributing to Punjab’s clean energy capacity.

Officials estimate that biogas generated from the Lahore landfill site will yield approximately $2.5 million in revenue over the next decade. The project also reviewed plans for a proposed Recycling Park, forecasted to generate around PKR 190 million in income.
