PUC and Verso sign long-term contract

In Maine, US, Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has signed a five-year deal with Bucksport-based paper manufacturer Verso Paper for electricity generated from biomass.

PUC Chairman Jack Cashman said: ‘I am in favour of this proposal because of a number of things, not the least of which is that I think conservative analysis by our consultants shows a net present value benefit to ratepayers but also the environmental changes this will bring about that I think are desirable.’

Verso will utilise surplus wood from its mill to produce electricity.
