Professor Isuwa Suleiman Aji, a Mechanical Engineering expert at the University of Maiduguri, has emphasised the potential of biomass waste in driving Nigeria’s industrial development.

As reported by The Nigeria Education News, he shared these insights during the university’s 82nd inaugural lecture, titled “Transforming Biomass Wastes into Wealth: Innovative Pathway to a Sustainable Industrial Future”, held on 25 September 2025 at El-Kanemi Hall.

Professor Aji highlighted that proper utilisation of agricultural and biomass residues could significantly contribute to national industrialisation.

His decade-long research focuses on converting these wastes into valuable composite materials capable of supporting economic growth.

Components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin, he explained, offer innovative solutions for industrial applications while promoting eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

His work has produced practical innovations including plant-based lubricants, environmentally safe corrosion inhibitors, labour-reducing industrial machinery, and bio-composites for various manufacturing processes.

Professor Aji also pointed out that increasing environmental concerns, rising wood prices, and technological progress are accelerating the global shift from petroleum-based plastics to sustainable alternatives.

The lecture was formally opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, who praised Professor Aji’s contributions and reaffirmed the university’s support for academic research and scholarly engagement.

The event drew faculty, experts, students, and staff, concluding with the Vice-Chancellor presenting a token of appreciation to Professor Aji.
