Port of Eastport expands for wood pellets

In Maine, US, the Port of Eastport will soon be the only Northeast US-based port able to handle wood pellets, as it works to complete an expansion project.

The new infrastructure will be complete by the end of the year or early 2012. It will feature a bulk storage yard and conveyor that will be able to handle woodchips destined for Europe.

FutureMetrics is behind the design of the project.

The Port of Eastport may not be only one in the region handling imported and exported pellets for long, however. In the north of Maine at the Port of Portland, F.E. Wood & Sons is looking to develop a pellet production plant that will include an upgrade of rail infrastructure and an expansion of the port.
