Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has signed the commercial operation date (COD) for the 15MW Pontianak Biomass Power Plant II in West Kalimantan.
Reported on January 2, 2026, the announcement confirms the facility is ready for commercial operations and represents another step in Indonesia’s efforts to expand renewable energy and reduce reliance on coal-fired power.
The project forms part of PLN’s broader strategy to integrate biomass into the national energy mix.
Recent analyses, however, have highlighted ongoing challenges around biomass supply chain transparency, lifecycle emissions, and concerns that biomass co-firing could slow the long-term phase-out of coal.
Nevertheless, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) is also assessing new biomass manufacturing facilities and exploring other renewable options, including nuclear power, under its latest RUPTL planning framework.
