Plant in Spain begins operations

In the central Spanish province of Burgos, renewable energy firm Acciona Energy has connected its second biomass plant to the grid.

Costing €50 million to build, the facility will produce 16MW of electricity from 102,000 tonnes of straw a year.

Acciona has already secured its feedstock supply and this will come mainly from the Burgos and Palencia provinces through medium- and long-term supply contracts.

The plant, which has created 100 permanent jobs in addition to 300 construction jobs while it was being built, has now transferred its first kilowatts to the grid as part of a three month trial period before full-scale production commences.
