Owensboro welcomes new RNG facility

A new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility officially opened at the West Daviess County Landfill in Kentucky, US, last week, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Redtail Renewables and Pacolet Milliken.
The project captures landfill gas and transforms it into renewable natural gas, helping to cut greenhouse gas emissions while generating additional revenue for the landfill.
“If the wellfield and projects weren’t here, methane would escape into the atmosphere, and methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. This facility captures that methane and converts it into renewable energy,” explained Casey Holsapple, CEO of Redtail Renewables.
Local officials attended the event, including Daviess County Judge Executive Charlie Castlen, who noted the project had been in the works for roughly two decades.
“We’ve been working to make this happen for years, and it’s incredibly satisfying to see it come together today,” said Castlen. “We’re fully operational now, producing energy as we speak.”
Construction of the facility lasted between 12 and 15 months. Holsapple added: “The contract was first signed in 2021. We purchased it from a previous developer and completed construction this year.”
Officials emphasised the environmental and practical benefits of the project, which collects resources that would otherwise have gone to waste.
“Now we’re capturing the gas, processing it at this facility, and it will be available for use to heat homes and provide energy locally,” Castlen said.
The facility was financed entirely by Redtail Renewables and Pacolet Milliken, meaning Daviess County taxpayers did not bear any cost.
