Orangeburg County biomass project grinds to a halt

Orangeburg County Biomass is looking to build a wood-fired power plant but is struggling to find a client to secure the power purchase agreement.

The biomass power generator, planned for Orangeburg County’s John Matthews Industrial Park, will cost in the region of $100 million (€72.2 million) to erect.

Located on 55 acres of land, the project would burn mostly wood chip and forestry waste to generate 35MW of green electricity.

However, as the executive director of the Orangeburg County development Gregg Robinson states, ‘Our side of the deal is done. It’s up to the client to secure the power purchase agreement and to advance to the next level.’

The environmental studies and permits are complete but the building work cannot commence until a deal has been agreed with a utility provider.
