Naturgy links Navarre’s first biomethane plant to gas grid

Spanish energy company Naturgy has connected Navarre’s first biomethane facility to its gas distribution network.

The Cabanillas plant, operated by local firm E-Cogeneración Cabanillas, will supply up to 22 GWh of renewable gas each year via Naturgy’s distribution subsidiary, Nedgia - enough to meet the annual demand of around 4,000 households.

It is the twelfth biomethane site in Spain to be integrated into Naturgy’s network.

The project builds on an existing biogas cogeneration facility launched in 2011, expanding its capabilities to process agricultural and agri-food waste, particularly pig slurry, into pipeline-quality biomethane.

Part of the investment was supported by Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

With an injection capacity of 320 normal cubic metres per hour, the plant will also make use of the digestate by-product as a nutrient source, reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers.

Naturgy said the development aligns with its broader strategy to advance the energy transition by expanding green gas infrastructure.

Nedgia now operates 12 biomethane injection points nationwide, with a combined capacity of 328 GWh per year, and has 74 more projects under development.

In Navarre alone, the company is progressing seven additional schemes that could collectively deliver up to 400 GWh annually.
