Energy giant Naturgy has announced a partnership with renewable specialist ID Energy Group to develop 20 new biomethane plants across Spain.
The alliance, confirmed on Wednesday 21 May, signals a push by Naturgy to lead the growth of renewable gases as a key element in the country’s energy transition.
With an investment exceeding €500 million, the joint projects aim to produce around 1,600 GWh of biomethane annually - enough to meet the energy needs of approximately 320,000 homes.
The plants will be located in various regions of Spain and are scheduled to become operational between 2026 and 2028.
Naturgy’s director of renewable gases, José Luis Gil, emphasised that the partnership accelerates the development of biomethane in Spain, praising ID Energy Group’s extensive experience in renewable gases across Europe.
Similarly, Julio Espadas, director of ID Energy Group, called Naturgy 'an industrial partner of stature', noting that the collaboration offers a significant opportunity to expand within the green gas sector.
The alliance not only focuses on reducing CO₂ emissions through the production of green gas derived from waste but also aims to enhance energy independence, generate biofertilisers, and optimise resource use — advancing a more sustainable and circular economy, Naturgy stated.
ID Energy Group, headquartered in Spain, specialises in renewable energy projects with a strong focus on solar photovoltaics and operates in multiple European countries including Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, and Italy.
This collaboration reinforces Naturgy and ID Energy Group’s commitment to driving Spain’s decarbonisation efforts and shaping the future of renewable gases in the European energy landscape.
