Avenir Marine Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Avenir LNG, has signed a framework fuel supply agreement with shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk to supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) from 2027.
The agreement, concluded in the second half of 2025, will see first deliveries timed to coincide with the arrival of the first dual-fuel liquefied gas vessels entering Maersk's time-chartered fleet.
Maersk describes bio-methane as a promising fuel pathway that can contribute to its energy transition, noting that with the right sourcing and production pathway it can achieve significant greenhouse gas reductions over its lifecycle.
However, the company has also flagged caveats around the technology, noting that LNG remains a fossil fuel and that methane slip — during extraction, transport, processing and on-vessel — must be carefully controlled across all methane pathways.
Avenir operates a fleet of five LNG transport and bunker vessels and has two newbuilds on order. The company said the deal supports the shipping industry's efforts to reduce emissions and expand access to low-emission alternative fuels at ports worldwide.
