Korea Midland Power launches biomass project to turn estuary waste into green fuel

The “Geumgang Estuary Herbaceous RE-BORN Project,” signed earlier this month, is designed to recycle vegetation cleared from the estuary into renewable fuel.
Alongside creating a circular resource system, the scheme aims to improve water quality and support regional sustainability goals.
Company president Lee Young-jo said the project reflected Korea Midland Power’s duty to act on climate change in collaboration with local communities.
“As an energy public enterprise, responding to the climate crisis is not a choice but a responsibility,” he noted, pledging to promote a carbon-neutral culture and inspire future generations to protect the environment.
The biomass plan sits within a broader programme of green investment by the state-owned utility, which has also led projects in blue hydrogen, offshore wind, solar power and carbon capture.
The firm’s environmental achievements were recognised in August when it won the Grand Prize in the Public Institution Environment category at the 2025 Korea ESG Management Awards.
