Kobe Steel and MUCC launch feasibility study for black pellets

Black pellets are produced by applying thermal treatment to traditional wood pellets (often called white pellets), resulting in a product that delivers an energy output comparable to coal.
This advancement presents promising opportunities to accelerate decarbonisation efforts within power generation and steel production sectors.
The partnership leverages MUCC’s proprietary black pellet manufacturing technology alongside Kobe Steel’s extensive knowledge and experience in steelmaking processes.
By combining their expertise, the two companies aim to pioneer sustainable solutions that could transform their industries.
The initial phase of the study will concentrate on implementing MUCC’s technology at Kobe Steel’s Kakogawa Works facility, with the objective of establishing a formal joint venture by 2026.
Beyond this domestic initiative, Kobe Steel is also exploring potential overseas expansions, including the construction of manufacturing plants abroad, to supply black pellets to a broader range of industrial clients seeking greener alternatives.
This collaboration highlights a growing trend among heavy industry leaders to invest in innovative fuel sources as part of their commitment to reducing carbon footprints and meeting global climate targets.
If successful, black pellets could become a key component in the transition towards cleaner steelmaking and power generation, offering industries a viable path away from traditional fossil fuels without compromising energy efficiency.
