Klaipėda LNG Terminal plans virtual biomethane liquefaction service

International terminal operator KN Energies has announced plans to launch a virtual biomethane liquefaction service at the Klaipėda LNG terminal, in a move aimed at expanding the liquefied natural gas (LNG) value chain and supporting the transition to more sustainable fuels.
The service, expected to go live later this quarter, will allow biomethane producers and suppliers across Lithuania and Europe to connect their operations with the LNG logistics system.
By enabling the virtual liquefaction of biomethane injected into the common European gas grid, the initiative offers a flexible, cost-effective solution for those seeking to monetise renewable gases.
This development positions the Klaipėda LNG terminal among a select group of facilities in Europe — and the first in its region — to offer such a service.
Of the 28 LNG terminals currently operating across the continent, only a small number provide either physical or virtual biomethane liquefaction capabilities.
The new service is set to play a key role in the decarbonisation of maritime transport, particularly as the European Union prepares to enforce stricter renewable fuel requirements from 2025 under Regulation 2023/1805.
By facilitating the integration of biomethane into LNG supply chains, the Klaipėda terminal will contribute to lowering emissions in one of the most hard-to-abate sectors.
The introduction of virtual liquefaction will not affect the terminal’s core function of regasification but will enhance the competitiveness and versatility of its infrastructure.
A significant milestone in the project was reached on 8 July 2025, when Lithuania’s National Energy Regulatory Council approved amendments to the LNG Terminal Regulations.
The service is currently undergoing final preparations, including certification, ahead of its formal launch.
