Grupo Toysal and CycleØ commission new biomethane plant in Galicia

Waste management company Grupo Toysal and renewable energy developer CycleØ have announced the commissioning of a new biomethane plant in Galicia, Spain.

The facility, named Ecogalia and located in Porriño, Pontevedra, will process up to 22,000 tonnes of organic waste each year, converting it into 45 GWh of biomethane.

The renewable gas, produced through CycleØ’s proprietary technology, will be injected directly into Spain’s gas distribution network. By replacing fossil fuels, the project is expected to prevent around 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

At full capacity, the plant will generate 6.6 million cubic metres of biomethane annually. In addition to its environmental benefits, the project will create local employment, strengthen the circular economy and enhance waste treatment in the region.

The Ecogalia project represents CycleØ’s second major milestone in converting industrial waste into renewable gas, following its acquisition of the GARYC waste management facility in Toledo.

CycleØ currently operates three biomethane plants in Spain and has developed the country’s first private gas injection point. The company has set out ambitious plans to develop up to 30 biogas plants across the Iberian Peninsula by 2030, in line with Spain’s national target of scaling biomethane production to 20 TWh per year.

Laurence Molke, CEO of CycleØ, described the collaboration with Toysal as “a perfect example of how partnerships can create value from waste, supporting greater sustainability and driving decarbonisation.”

Toysal’s president, Víctor Toca Achurra, added: “This project reinforces our mission to operate responsibly and sustainably. By working with CycleØ, a partner that shares our values of innovation and environmental commitment, we can ensure the long-term success of Ecogalia and make a positive contribution to society.”
